These are the long-neck women of Thailand, who are most recognized for the brass rings worn around their necks. They are actually Kayan refugees who fled oppression and war in their native Burma. There is debate on whether or not these women are being held in Thailand to boost the tourism industry. There are three camps or villages that the women all reside in along the Thai border. Because they are so contained in a small area, it would be very easy for the Thai government to control their environment. The women have made a life for themselves in the villages nonetheless. They have found a way of turning their weaving skills into a profitable business and it has helped many of the women earn a living for themselves.
