Our Best-Selling Bags
So these are by far some of our top-selling bags! From left to right, Newspaper, Combo Quilt and Comalapa Patch. The bottom three images are the smaller versions of these bags that are also available. Each bag is handmade using recycled fabrics from Guatemala. The fabric comes from the traditional dress, specifically the blouses and skirts that women wear in Guatemala. Using recycled fabrics rather than new allows each bag to be 100% unique, eco-friendly and it also helps keep the cost down. The large bags retail for $28 and the smaller ones $24. Because each bag is 100% unique, we are working on finding a way to successfully sell them on our retail website: www.uniquebatikfairtrade.com. Any suggestions? We would love to hear from you!
The Long-neck Women
These are the long-neck women of Thailand, who are most recognized for the brass rings worn around their necks. They are actually Kayan refugees who fled oppression and war in their native Burma. There is debate on whether or not these women are being held in Thailand to boost the tourism industry. There are three camps or villages that the women all reside in along the Thai border. Because they are so contained in a small area, it would be very easy for the Thai government to control their environment. The women have made a life for themselves in the villages nonetheless. They have found a way of turning their weaving skills into a profitable business and it has helped many of the women earn a living for themselves. These women make our Thai Longneck Scarves, which can be purchased from our retail website. Rather than receiving a portion of the money earned from their scarves, the long-neck women are all paid upfront for their work. All of the scarves come with a tag that explains where it is made and has a picture of one of the long-neck women. Makes a great Christmas Gift!
